The Lockheed Martin [ex Loral / Texas Instruments ex Ford Aerospace / Texas Instruments] AAS-38A/B Nite Hawk forward-looking infrared (FLIR) is the Night Attack Hornet [F/A-18C and F/A-18D] Laser Target Designation (LTD) system for laser-guided munitions delivery. Mounted on the port fuselage (Station 4), the AAS-38 enhances the Hornet's night attack capability by providing real-time Forward Looking Infrared [FLIR] thermal imagery displayed on one of the cockpit CRTs and HUD. The AAS-38 FLIR can be fully integrated with other Hornet avionics, and data from the unit is used for the calculation of weapons release solutions. Only four of these were available during the Gulf War, seeing service with VMFA(AW)-121. The improved AAS-38A Laser Target Designator/Rangefinder (LTD/R) was cleared for Fleet service on Hornet-C/Ds in January 1993. The Martin-Marietta ASQ-173 Laser Detector Tracker/CAMera (LDT/CAM), a derivative of the Air Force PAVE PENNY pod, does not have the ability to laser designate targets. It is a passive tracking device that detects laser light reflected from targets illuminated by ground troops, other aircraft or the Hornet's own AAS-38 targeting FLIR on the other side of the fuselage. The ASQ-173 relays target location information to the cockpit displays and mission computers.</span><div class="thumb tright" style="clear: right; float: right; margin: 0.5em 0px 1.3em 1.4em; width: auto; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><div class="thumbinner" style="min-width: 100px; border: 1px solid rgb(200, 204, 209); padding: 3px; background-color: rgb(248, 249, 250); font-size: 13.16px; text-align: center; overflow: hidden; width: 222px;"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AAS-38A.jpg" class="image" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;"><img alt="" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f1/AAS-38A.jpg/220px-AAS-38A.jpg" width="220" height="147" class="thumbimage" srcset="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f1/AAS-38A.jpg/330px-AAS-38A.jpg 1.5x, //upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f1/AAS-38A.jpg/440px-AAS-38A.jpg 2x" data-file-width="706" data-file-height="473" style="border: 1px solid rgb(200, 204, 209); vertical-align: middle; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"></a><div class="thumbcaption" style="border: 0px; line-height: 1.4em; padding: 3px; font-size: 12.3704px; text-align: left;"><div class="magnify" style="float: right; margin-left: 3px; margin-right: 0px;"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AAS-38A.jpg" class="internal" title="Enlarge" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: linear-gradient(transparent, transparent), url(&quot;data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=%22http://www.w3.org/2000/svg%22 viewBox=%220 0 11 15%22 width=%2215%22 height=%2211%22%3E %3Cg id=%22magnify-clip%22 fill=%22%23fff%22 stroke=%22%23000%22%3E %3Cpath id=%22bigbox%22 d=%22M1.509 1.865h10.99v7.919h-10.99z%22/%3E %3Cpath id=%22smallbox%22 d=%22M-1.499 6.868h5.943v4.904h-5.943z%22/%3E %3C/g%3E %3C/svg%3E&quot;); display: block; text-indent: 15px; white-space: nowrap; overflow: hidden; width: 15px; height: 11px; user-select: none;"></a></div>The Martin-Marietta AAS-38A mounted on an F/A-18C</div></div></div><p style="margin: 0.5em 0px; line-height: inherit; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">The AAS-38 pod came in 2 varieties: The AAS-38 (non LASER Designator/TV FLIR only) AAS-38A LASER Target Designator/Ranger (LTD/R). Early flight clearance work to clear the aircraft for air-to-ground were suspended due to development delays with the F-14 and it being shifted away from the air to ground mission. At the time, the Tomcat was so expensive (and lacked proper defensive&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_countermeasures" class="mw-redirect" title="Electronic countermeasures" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">electronic countermeasures</a>&nbsp;(<i>DECM</i>) and radar homing and warning (<i>RHAW</i>) for overland operations) that the Navy did not want to risk it in the air-to-ground role. However, the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tactical_Airborne_Reconnaissance_Pod_System" title="Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance Pod System" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">TARPS</a>&nbsp;mission had proven the Tomcat was survivable overland and upgrades to the Tomcat's DECM, expendables and RHAW gear were developed to increase its survivability. With the end of the Cold War and de-emphasis on the Fleet Air Defense mission,&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAVAIR" class="mw-redirect" title="NAVAIR" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">NAVAIR</a>&nbsp;had renewed flight clearance work before Desert Storm so the F-14 could carry&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_bombs" class="mw-redirect" title="Gravity bombs" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">gravity bombs</a>&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser-guided_bombs" class="mw-redirect" title="Laser-guided bombs" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">laser-guided bombs</a>&nbsp;if the target was lased by another jet (first Tomcat LGB drop in combat was made by&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VF-41" title="VF-41" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">VF-41</a>&nbsp;in 1995 during operations over Bosnia with an&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-6_Intruder" class="mw-redirect" title="A-6 Intruder" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">A-6 Intruder</a>&nbsp;providing the requisite target illumination). Meanwhile, the decision had been made by Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV) to retire the A-6 altogether and allow the F-14 Block 1 Strike variant to take over as the precision strike platform for the air wing. However, the $1.6B Block 1 Strike program was canceled in budgetary cuts by 1994 with only enough funding to integrate the JDAM, which was years away. In late 1994, an unsolicited proposal from&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Marietta" title="Martin Marietta" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">Martin Marietta</a>&nbsp;was initiated to demonstrate how a USAF LANTIRN targeting pod could be rapidly integrated onto the Tomcat. This effort was done under the auspices of Commander, Naval Air Forces Atlantic Fleet (COMNAVAIRLANT) using a fleet aircraft to integrate the digital&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIL-STD-1553" title="MIL-STD-1553" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">1553</a>-based pod on an analog F-14B. In March 1995 a&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VF-103" class="mw-redirect" title="VF-103" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">VF-103</a>&nbsp;fleet aircraft successfully dropped the first laser-guided training rounds (LGTR) and quickly laser-guided bombs (LGB). Due to the early success and interest from Fleet Commanders, NAVAIR began to procure pods and control units for deployment, resulting in VF-103 receiving the first LANTIRN pod June 14, 1996 in time for its upcoming deployment.</p><p style="margin: 0.5em 0px; line-height: inherit; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">The basic LANTIRN was modified into LANTIRN Targeting System (LTS), the navigation pod was removed from the two-pod system and the targeting pod was improved for Tomcat use. The LTS featured a&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Positioning_System" title="Global Positioning System" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">Global Positioning System</a>and inertial measurement unit that provided the pod line-of-sight cueing and weapon release ballistics and eliminated the need for external cumbersome and time consuming boresight equipment.</p><p style="margin: 0.5em 0px; line-height: inherit; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Unlike the early versions, the LTS performed all weapon release calculations and presented release cues that it had generated to the aircrew. The LTS also had a masking avoidance curve display (preventing firing the laser at the jet) and eventually a north orientation curve and 40,000 feet capable laser. The latter became very useful allowing F-14s to employ LGBs above potential threat systems and it came into its own in the higher terrain in&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afghanistan" title="Afghanistan" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">Afghanistan</a>&nbsp;during&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Enduring_Freedom" title="Operation Enduring Freedom" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">Operation Enduring Freedom</a>.</p><p style="margin: 0.5em 0px; line-height: inherit; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">The LTS could also generate coordinates for any target located on the FLIR, and a latter software modification, known as T3 (Tomcat Tactical Targeting) increased the accuracy of the coordinates produced by the LTS and allowed generated coordinates for GPS/INS guided weapons (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JDAM" class="mw-redirect" title="JDAM" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">JDAM</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JSOW" class="mw-redirect" title="JSOW" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">JSOW</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_Corrected_Munitions_Dispenser" title="Wind Corrected Munitions Dispenser" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">WCMD</a>). The first combat use of this was during Operation Enduring Freedom when an F-14 generated coordinates for a&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-52" class="mw-redirect" title="B-52" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">B-52</a>&nbsp;that dropped a&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CBU-103" class="mw-redirect" title="CBU-103" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">CBU-103</a>&nbsp;WCMD from over 40,000 feet. These weapons scored hits on a vehicle convoy that had stopped after the first vehicle was destroyed by the Tomcat with LGBs.</p><p style="margin: 0.5em 0px; line-height: inherit; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">The pod also featured an internal computer with ballistics data for the various precision munitions carried by the F-14. Data is fed to the pod by the Tomcat’s&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AWG-9" class="mw-redirect" title="AWG-9" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">AWG-9</a>&nbsp;(F-14A and F-14B) and&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AN/APG-71" class="mw-redirect" title="AN/APG-71" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">AN/APG-71</a>&nbsp;(F-14D) radar, but the LTS in turn only sends video and guidance symbology to the crew's cockpit displays. This means that few wiring and software changes had to be made to the Tomcat in order for it to operate the LTS. All pod controls are in the RIO’s cockpit, but the bomb release button is situated with the pilot. The LTS had a price tag of around 3 million US Dollars each and due to these high costs, only 75 were bought for fleet use. Typically, an F-14 squadron brought 6 to 8 pods with them on deployment, which would be permanently fitted to the non-<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tactical_Airborne_Reconnaissance_Pod_System" title="Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance Pod System" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">TARPS</a>&nbsp;jets.</p><p style="margin: 0.5em 0px; line-height: inherit; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">The first combat use of the LTS was in December 1998 during&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Desert_Fox" class="mw-redirect" title="Operation Desert Fox" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none;">Operation Desert Fox</a>&nbsp;by VF-32.</p></div></td>

ATFLIR features third generation mid-wave infrared targeting and navigation FLIRs, an electro-optical sensor, laser rangefinder, laser designator and laser spot tracker. These functions on today's Hornets are provided by three separate pods. Each production F/A-18E/F Super Hornet will be delivered to the US Navy with an ATFLIR pod installed. ATFLIR is a member of the Terminator family of infrared targeting pods. ATFLIR's reliability and maintainability outstands over previous generations FLIRs. Its powerful diode-pumped laser has been demonstrated effective above 50,000-ft (15,000 meters) The first system was delivered to the Navy in June 2002. The Block 1 ATFLIR advanced targeting pod achieved Initial Operational Capability (IOC) in September 2003 with US Navy's F/A-18E/Fs. The targeting pod system was deployed for the first time on F/A-18C/D/E/F Hornet/Super Hornets in support of military operations in Iraq.</span><br style="margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: &quot;Arial Unicode MS&quot;, Arial, Tahoma; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;"><br style="margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: &quot;Arial Unicode MS&quot;, Arial, Tahoma; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: &quot;Arial Unicode MS&quot;, Arial, Tahoma; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">On 22 February 2005, Raytheon announced that ATFLIR program had entered full rate production and the company expected to deliver four pods per month to the Navy during 2005 and six pods per month beginning in 2006. Raytheon also stated that can produce up to 12 ATFLIRs per month to accommodate domestic customers and international sales demands. The US Navy awarded Raytheon a $275 million modification contract to a previous contract for procurement of 80 ATFLIR pods full rate production III on March 16, 2005, for the F/A-18A/B/C/D/E/F aircraft with deliveries expected to complete in March 2008.</span><br style="margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: &quot;Arial Unicode MS&quot;, Arial, Tahoma; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;"><br style="margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: &quot;Arial Unicode MS&quot;, Arial, Tahoma; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: &quot;Arial Unicode MS&quot;, Arial, Tahoma; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">In June 2005, Raytheon announced that was going to insert the most advanced high-speed data-link technology into the ATFLIR pod in accordance with the US Navy vision for network-centric operations. The new data-link will be based on the Ku-band frequency instead of C-band data-links carried by the majority of deployed targeting pods. Ku-band offers greater wideband (approx. 6 - 20 times faster than C-band) and two-way communications enabling near instantaneous communications with ground units and shipboard command and control systems.
